News from Elder and Sister Smith

Dear Family  & Friends,                         14 Sep 2013

It has been an interesting week.  We finished imaging the books that were assigned in our computer to do.  We were told that there are more books that need to be imaged, but we have not been definitively told about that assignment yet.  Our contacts in Santiago told us they would be there on Friday to pick up the hard drives.  Not having any imaging work, we took the time and studied on Thursday and planned to go back to the cemetery on Friday so that we could talk to them about what to do.  We found out later they had gone to the cemetery on Thursday to pick up the hard drives.    After talking to our contact in Santiago, we determined that if we were going to get the hard drives sent to Salt Lake, it would behoove us to take the drives to Misael (who is doing imaging work in the Cementerio Playa Ancha, he’s our contacts son-in-law. We had left the hard drives at the Cemetery (Santa Inez), so Friday we took the Micro (bus) to the cemetery in Viña del Mar and tried to find a Micro to Valparaiso.  We started to walk towards Lieder from the cemetery as we knew that was the route that the Micro’s took.  As I was looking at the signs on the Micro’s, I tripped on the side walk and did a nice face plant, hit my knee and skinned up my hand a little.  My right eye is a little swollen and black but since it is swollen you cannot see the black.  Lucky for me.  :o)  I can just blame it on your Dad.  :o)

We did finally find a Micro that said Valparaiso on it and we got on.  We got to Valparaiso and Dad discussed with one of the conductors as to when we should get off.  We got off and Elder Smith said that we needed to go up.  After we were almost to the top of the hill we did notice a policeman and Dad asked him how we would get to the Cemetery Playa Ancha that we were looking for.  He said you go down a few blocks and then turn left.  As we were finally walking toward the cemetery we heard a honk and it was the people we were looking for. By this time we were only two or three blocks from the cemetery.  They took us to look at the water and then to the cemetery.  It was very cold, as the wind was blowing off the water.  They showed us some techniques that would help us improve our speed and accuracy and how to do it.  They have been a great help.  We gave them our hard drives and then Misael showed us where and which Micro would take us back to Viña del Mar.  It was a learning day of how to get around and how to put your trust in the Lord and listen to his still small whisperings.
We went to the Feria market today and then decided that we would walk to the Viña del Mar clock.  It turned out to be a nice day for a walk.     A woman stopped us as we were about to the castle.  She was so excited to see us.  She and her children are visiting here from Texas for the festival.  They have been members for a long time.  It was fun to talk with them.  They were surprised that we were on a mission in Chile.  We saw a lot of Pelicans and seagulls.  It turned out that round trip was around 5 miles.  We were both feeling it when we got home.  It was a nice day though.
I have decided that Vina del Mar is much nicer and prettier than Valparaiso.  If we finish the imaging in Viña del Mar we may need to go to Valparaiso every day.  That will cost a lot more as we would need to take the Micro every day.  The building in Valparaiso is much nicer than the one that we are at but I like the smaller feel of the Viña del Mar cemetery.
Ken got some really great pictures today and we will send you some.  I love the work!

May the Lord bless you all.

With Love Elder & Sister Smith
